Agent Carter

This last week saw the finale of Agent Carter, Marvels foray into the spy thriller genre which turned out surprisingly well in my eyes, despite what the exceptionally mediocre ratings and responses say.

Hayley Atwell reprises her role as Agent Peggy Carter for this mini-series based right after Captain America: The First Avenger and follows Miss Carter dealing with the loss of her love Steve Rogers. The show shines a light on what happened between WWII and the formation of S.H.I.E.L.D. by Peggy Carter, Howard Stark and Colonel Chester Phillips.

Agent Carter has a Mad Men vibe to me, the costumes, the sets and the almost over the top sexism all make you realize that Marvel are at least trying to make a meaningful show which doesn’t heavily rely on superheroes and cameos from the Avengers but the context of the 1940’s. Having said that their are plenty of easter eggs and hints for the avid Marvel fan, such as The Howling Commandos and Leviathan.

Dominic Cooper also reprises his role of Howard Stark, Tony Stark’s women-and-weapons-loving father whose super deadly inventions are stolen and ‘fall in the wrong hands’. James D’Arcy brings to life one of Marvel’s greatest non-superhero characters Edwin Jarvis, Stark’s butler who later becomes Tony’s AI helper voiced by Paul Bettany.

Despite all the praise i’m giving it still suffers from typical TV pitfalls, the worst being the episodic formula with a super-weapon threat every week. Although it does die down towards the end, it is nevertheless a little sad to see them fumble some interesting ideas just to fit the formula. I never understand the reasoning behind making a show which was made for a big over-arching story a 40 minute adventure a week, but that’s a whole other article.

The look and feel of the show is done very well. 40’s New York looks great, it’s nice and refreshing to see retro New York which is in the background and not shoved in your face every 5 minutes. All of the acting is great, everyone suits the style and look Marvel has chosen; especially Lyndsy Fonseca, of Nikita and Kick- Ass fame, who plays Peggy Carter’s friend Angie Martinelli and fits in perfectly as a waitress.

The most mind blowing part of Agent Carter is something which I didn’t even pick up on and if it’s confirmed to be true it has some severe ramifications. I’ll let Rob at ComicsExplained, well explain. (WARNING: SPOILER ALERT!)

Now Agent Carter has ended, will we get a second season released? Do you think it deserves it? Or are you just waiting until Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns?

Spider-Man joins Disney, kinda

The wall crawler has a long and confusing history when it comes to the big screen, Sam Raimi made two great Spider-Man movies, the second one being the pinnacle of superhero films at the time, and his third installment was so offensive to fans that I don’t want to waste anymore time discussing it. The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2 were supposed to bring the franchise to the forefront of Sony’s lineup and they have many plans for the web head in the future, like a Sinister Six and Venom spinoff as well as a female centric Spider-Man film. For those who don’t know why Sony owns the rights to a Marvel character here’s a quick history lesson;

It all started in 1985 when Cannon Films bought the rights for about $225,000 from Marvel, who were still just a publishing house because at the time superhero films were barely a twinkle in Stan Lee’s eye. Cannon tried and failed for years trying to make a film based on Peter Parker and in 1990 the rights were negotiated to 21st Century Films who also failed at producing a wall crawler movie. Next Carolco (the studio who brought you Rambo, Total Recall and Terminator 2) were sold the rights and had the idea of getting James Cameron to make the film. Could you imagine if we got a James Cameron Spider-Man film? Unfortunately the video rights were sold earlier to Viacom and the TV rights to Tristar which ended up causing multiple court battles. Eventually the rights found their way into MGM’s pockets who quickly sold the rights to Columbia Pictures due to monetary issues. Columbia is now owned by Sony Pictures and Spider-Man has seen more rights issues than Martin Luther King.

I told you it was confusing, and that was just a condensed version. Now though Spider-Man has returned home to Disney/Marvel in what can only be described as the best case scenario, kind of, again its all a bit strange. Basically Sony has allowed Disney to use Spider-Man in the MCU, his first appearance being in Captain America: Civil War, but i’ll get to that later. Marvel won’t pay for the rights to put Spider-Man in their films and neither party will receive money from the other’s films with Spider-Man in it. Basically Sony gets a boost to their film’s popularity by letting Marvel use Spider-Man and Marvel get fucking Spider-Man back, sorta. Basically we will get Marvel films with Spider-Man in and unrelated Sony films which also feature Spider-Man, just the Andrew Garfield version. Now Sony do still get the final say on what happens to Spider-Man in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), but I’m hoping they let Marvel do what they do best. Now the fun begins, speculation. Who will play Peter Parker? Will it even be Peter Parker? Another origin story? Hmm, ok. Organic or Web Shooters?

Let me say that I honestly trust Marvel to do whatever they need to do, but saying that my first choice for Spider-Man is Donald Glover as Miles Morales. Donald Glover is an actor, musician, comedian and so much more who is most famous for his role of Troy Barnes in Community and for his rap alter-ego Childish Gambino, he even voiced Miles on the TV show Spider-Man: Web Warriors. Even though Miles Morales in the comics is younger than Parker, around 13, I wouldn’t mind an older Miles to get Don Glover to play the part.

Donald Glover for Spider-man.

Nathan Stewart-Jarrett would be another choice if they decide to choose Miles Morales, Stewart-Jarrett is known for playing Curtis in the UK series Misfits and Ian Johnson in Utopia. I’ve never seen Jarrett portray an American on-screen but I’m sure he would be up to the task. If Marvel decide to go the expected way and have a 17/18-year-old Peter Parker and Uncle Ben and Great Power and all that, then Logan Lerman from Percy Jackson fame would play a great Parker. While not great in Percy Jackson, he showed us his acting chops in the WWII tank drama Fury last year starring alongside Brad Pitt. Grant Gustin definitely has the Parker look but his role in The Flash doesn’t exactly show his range, although he hasn’t had a lot of chances, and would be an interesting if risky choice. No matter what Marvel choose I will be happy, so on that note let’s talk films.

Spider-Man will first appear in Captain America: Civil War which is due to release May 6, 2016 and will hopefully play a prominent role in the film like he does the comic, I’m just hoping Marvel pull off his introduction to the MCU because we have a stand alone Spider-Man movie being released July 28, 2017 moving Thor: Ragnarök back to November 3, 2017 which moved Black Panther from Nov 3 to July 6, 2018 which moved Captain Marvel to Nov 2, 2018 which in turn moved The Inhumans to July 12, 2019.

So Spider-Man has shaken up what we expected from Phase 3 with some lesser known characters getting shelved while Marvel set up the wall crawlers inclusion in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. When it’s all laid out it makes me one part excited to one part nervous. Who do you think should play Spider-Man? Should they stick to Peter Parker or go a different route? Do you even care? Let us know.
